There have been a number of rumors floating around regarding which infotainment system Porsche plans to feature in the upcoming models of the 911 Carrera and Carrera S models with both Apple and Google leading the fight. The winner of this battle according to a recent announcement from Porsche is that the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S models will exclusively feature the Apple CarPlay system instead of the Android Auto by Google.
Why Android Auto was not the Winner
According to Motor Trend Magazine there is a very specific reason for this all-important choice made by the team at Porsche. This is that they feel the Google Android Auto system requires the collection of an excessive amount of information from the vehicle and its driver. According to the information available in the Android Auto user segment, this software requires all vehicle manufacturers to let the system collect a wide range of vital information.
This information includes the cars speed, engine rpm, throttle position, coolant and oil temperatures, and many other important details. Once this information has been collected by the Android Auto System, it is then forwarded directly to Google. On the other hand the Apple CarPlay system only needs to know whether or not the vehicle is actually in motion at any given time. This simple process is used to help determine if the driver is safe.
CarPlay has a Lot to Offer
According to Apple the developer of CarPlay, this app has a lot to offer Porsche owners. They claim it is a “smarter way to use your iPhone in a car”. This program takes many of the things you want to be able to do with your iPhone while driving and makes them available to you via your car’s built in display. Among the many things you will be able to do is send and receive text messages, make phone calls, and use the built-in navigation system.
Along with all of this, you will be able to stream music straight from your iPhone to your vehicle’s audio system and make use of streaming audio such as Pandora, iTunes, and more. CarPlay also features Apple’s Siri voice command app, which has been specifically modified for use when driving. While both systems offer similar services the final decision boiled down to the amount of data Google wished to collect. A number of car manufacturers, including Porsche, are worried that Google may use this data to enhance its own line of upcoming cars, giving them an unfair advantage in the marketplace. CarPlay is expected to debut in the 2017 Porsche Carrera and Carrera S.
